Apple, Bacon, Cheddar Sandwiches

November 8, 2020

Let’s talk about grilled cheese. It’s comfort food at its finest for all ages. Whether you’re still eating it like you did as a kid or you’ve decided to give it a bit of a glow up, I need you to try this recipe! Soon, you’ll be serving it for everyone for every meal of the day!

Cheese Please!

This is my favorite sandwich, I’m constantly making it for lunch when I’m working at home, for dinner with Robby, and for most of our guests when they come through our door. It’s super easy to throw together and you’ll most likely have all of the ingredients on hand already. This particular combination of tart green apple slices, smoky bacon, and tangy whole grain mustard served between crispy bread with melted cheddar cheese is the perfect balance of flavor and difference in textures. Try it and see for yourself- you most likely won’t go back to making plain grilled cheese ever again.

The ABCs

Some of you may be thinking how do all three of these ingredients go together?! We know bacon and cheddar go together because aren’t we all constantly eating bacon cheeseburgers or bacon macaroni and cheese? No? Just me? Okay moving on.. New Englanders have taught us to put a slice of cheddar on apple pie which you’re probably totally for or totally against but even if you’re against it you can’t deny the delectable flavor of sharp cheddar cheese and sweet apples. Combine that sharpness and sweetness with the smoky bacon and I promise it will blow your mind!!

The Perfect Melt

When prepping your grilled cheese be sure to cut your apples really thin. If you prefer more of a crunch or even just some extra apple on your sandwich then you can stack more on top of each other. Just be sure they’re cut thin! When cooking your grilled cheese sometimes the bread will cook faster than the cheese melts. To help it all cook evenly you can cover your pan for a few seconds so the heat locks in and melts your bread. Don’t leave it covered for too long, you don’t want your bread to burn! No matter how you cook or prepare your grilled cheese I am confident this one will soon be your favorite!

Apple, Bacon, Cheddar Sandwiches

  • Author: Kelsey Nixon
  • Total Time: 20 minutes
  • Yield: 4 servings 1x

Description

My favorite take on the classic grilled cheese sandwich.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 8 slices white bread, sliced ½ inch thick

  • 4 teaspoons whole grain mustard

  • 8 ounces cheddar cheese, shredded

  • 12 slices Applewood smoked bacon, cooked until crispy

  • 1 Granny smith apple, sliced thin

Instructions

  1. Over medium-low heat, heat a grill pan or large skillet.

  2. Butter one side of each slice of bread, about ½ tablespoon per piece. Place four of the slices butter side down and spread mustard over the unbuttered sides of the bread. Top the mustard with shredded cheese, crisped bacon, and apple slices. Top the sandwiches with remaining slices of bread, buttered side up.

  3. Place assembled sandwiches in grill pan or skillet. Cook until cheese begins to melt and the bottom is golden brown. Flip and cook the other side until golden brown as well.

  4. Remove from skillet, slice in half, and serve immediately.
